The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned

Maya Angelou

Words and Listening

This space is like a great city. There are all kinds of flats, houses, mansions. All kinds of places that people call home. There are sofa surfers and people who spend nights in hostels and hotels and B&Bs. There are also runaways and rough sleepers who occupy the backs of restaurants and alleyways and make their homes under bridges and in subways.

In this space, you can read and reflect on the thoughts and words of a variety of people as they comment on home and on homelessness. You might like to imagine them speaking to you within the space and listen to their different voices. There are thoughts about: home, a spiritual home, homeless people, helping the homeless, structural sin and natural disasters. We’ve added some questions to help you think about the words and the images.

You might like to note down any ideas, comments, dreams, criticisms, reactions or images which come to mind in your journal or on your blog.

  • What do you think about these thoughts?
  • What do you think these voices are telling us?
  • How do these voices make you feel?

Write some thoughts of your own in your journal or blog.
